1/28/2010 Going For Net Zero
Not only does a typical home we build exceed Built Green Colorado and Energy Star requirements, we are always striving to take our homes to the next level. We currently are building a home for a customer from San Antonio, TX in our Trailside Estates neighborhood. This is a modified version of our “Hancock” plan and we are aiming to have the home as close to a “net zero” home as possible. “Net zero” is a term applied to a building or home with net zero energy consumption. Here is how we intend to accomplish this:
- Passive solar orientation with properly sized roof overhangs to minimize excessive solar gain in the summer
- 3.1 KW grid tied photovoltaic solar panels
- Solar panels to supply hot water to the home
- Pella triple pane wood windows with a high solar heat gain coefficient
- R-30 wall insulation with rigid foam sheathing to act as a thermal break
- R-60 attic insulation
- HRV (heat recovery ventilator) to recover heat from exhausted air from the home
- Conditioned crawlspace
- Tankless on demand water heater
As we progress on the home, we’ll post photographs of some of the above features. Stay posted!!
